Boys Read: Allowed! is a pilot program at Brisbane Grammar School where Senior students read aloud to Year 5 students before or after school. The aim of the program is to investigate in what ways young adult male students (Year 10 -12) reading aloud to younger students (Year 5 -6) challenge traditional models of masculinity and normalise a nurturing and
caregiving role.

The methodology includes taking observation field notes and conducting semi-structured pre-and post interviews with both older and younger readers. These focus groups investigate the boys’ attitudes towards reading as identity, public versus private reading, and their preferences of when/ where/ how they engage with reading for pleasure.

Marianna developed this project through ALIA’s LARK circle program. Over six sessions, Dr Suzana Sukovic and Dr Bhuva Narayan advised on defining research topics, stakeholder engagement and implementing effective methodologies for library research.
